The Purpose of the Roadmaps

The document “Final open schooling roadmaps” provides practical guidelines/recommendations for schools interested in implementing an open-schooling transformation process according to the COSMOS approach. It is organized in stages—accordingly to the main concepts of COSMOS (Community of Research and Open Schooling Practice, CORPOS; Community of Practice, CoP; Socio-Scientific Inquiry-Based Learning, SSIBL; and Teacher Professional Development, TPD)—offering different suggestions and examples (based on practice and real cases) on how each school (with a specific context and characteristics) can orientate in the implementation of such an open schooling process.

This document provides a structured framework for integrating the COSMOS approach across varied educational settings. It includes three critical supporting resources—three roadmaps—that extend the COSMOS framework’s applicability, detailing its alignment with curriculum design, its implementation in classroom settings, and its broader impact on school-community collaboration. Each roadmap proposes a different way of exploring this document—a unique perspective—tailored to guide a different stakeholder—teachers, school leaders, or policymakers—in making informed decisions on adopting and sustaining open schooling practices within their institutions. Collectively, these roadmaps underscore the adaptability and long-term viability of the COSMOS approach, providing essential information to foster an educational environment that encourages active student participation, meaningful community engagement, and a robust response to socio-scientific challenges.

The First Roadmap: COSMOS for Teachers

The first roadmap provides a practical guide for teachers aiming to involve students in COSMOS-based activities. It highlights the essential components of Socio-Scientific Inquiry-Based Learning (SSIBL), Communities of Practice (CoP), and real-world socio-scientific issues (SSIs). This guide intends to empower educators to design engaging, community-integrated activities, ensuring students actively participate in inquiry-based learning relevant for their local context. For a teacher wanting to engage students in activities based on the COSMOS approach, the following sequence of sections provides a comprehensive roadmap to planning, implementing, and refining student-centred, community-connected learning activities.

The Second Roadmap: COSMOS for School Leaders

The second roadmap helps a school leader interested in planning and stimulating the implementation of the COSMOS approach in his/her school. It covers foundational concepts, organizational structures, and phased implementation strategies that align with school objectives and community priorities. It assists school leaders in leading effective, sustainable open schooling transformations, promoting collaborative learning environments, and reinforcing connections between school and community.

The Third Roadmap: COSMOS for Policymakers

The third roadmap provides insights for policymakers evaluating COSMOS’s potential for curriculum integration. It outlines the model’s flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to enrich curricula with real-world applications. By emphasizing the CORPOS framework, ecological school openness, and teacher professional development, this roadmap enables policymakers to assess the COSMOS approach’s sustainability, ensuring that its adoption aligns with broader educational and community goals.
